Indians LOVE their mobiles! Don’t we all, kinda, sometimes…unfortunately we can’t seem to live without them. One of my favourite accessories is my headphones. I use them everyday. If I can’t find them I begin to panic…a wee bit:)
Well, in India let’s just say…they do things a little differently. I admit, it may be my rattled nervous system talking, but come on!
Do they NOT make headphones in India?!? No, Really! Everyone here has mobile, from the rickshaw drivers to the coconut sellers to the IT guys to the little old indian grandpas. Heck even little kids I see walking in the village! And yet, I have never seen a SINGLE person using headphones. You may ask why this is up for me?
Let me tell you….Everyone is listening to “something” on their mobiles. Not discreetly, so as not to disturb anyone. Nope at full volume! Whether it’s face timing with their sister, watching their favourite Indian drama, tuning in to prayers or vedic chants or blastin their beloved bollywood tunes. Lord help me!
Inside a restaurant, on the beach, and my all time favourite “in closed quarters”…for instance a train compartment, which I recently had the honour of experiencing first hand.
All of us crammed into a train compartment, each mobile in hand. Volume up! No one else seems to mind, at all, only this tightly wrapped Canadian whose nervous system is slightly on edge.
Got to find the humour, or go mad. This is when being a good girl scout, prepared for flood or famine is a good thing. Earplugs to the rescue. NEVER travel without them. Ahhhhhhh…..Silence is Golden.
India always the great teacher. It is what it is. We all dance to a different drummer. That is the beauty of life. Keep laughing. Another big dose of acceptance.
