When I stopped by Aryas Spices this morning for my post beach walk juice. I was greeted with “Happy Vishu!”
I immediately searched the internet to see wha this special day was about.
It was Malayalam New Years Day! Celebration time! Varkala was packed with temple visitors, many young people and families on the cliff and the beach.
When I got back to the hostel the melodic sounds of the chanting at the Hindu temple filled the air.
Ardra greeted me with a joyful “Happy Vishu!” and told me of a Vishu feast being served at True Thomas Cafe.
I had just stopped by Tickety Boo and had a plain dosa so wasn’t hungry. I needed to get hungry!!! I had a few hours to work up an appetite. I wasn’t going to miss out on a traditional Kerala feast, all vegetarian:))
True Thomas Cafe has style, it’s not onlyl a feast for the belly but also the eyes. I love attention taken to every detail, rustic decor, the tables are wood with antique sewing machine bases. Dishes are served on copper plates, with copper spoons and small pottery bowls.
The atmosphere is welcoming, with clean energy and the food excellent.
A banana leaf was placed in front of me. It’s not often that you get to eat on a banana leaf here anymore unless it’s for a festival. I love eating this way.
It was the type of meal you keep being served until your appetite is completely satiated!
I mentioned I was not very hungry so please only a small amount. The server proceeded to place all these tasty little servings of traditional kerala dishes on the leaf, suddenly my hunger was growing. This was going to be fabulous!!!
The last bit of the feast was the sweet, with a small (non gmo) banana. Heavenly!!! I ate every last morsel. I didn’t want it to end cause it was SO damn good, but knew my stomach would not be happy with me later if I kept going.
This delicious meal takes the top standing of all the food I have eaten in India, every dish was perfectly spiced. Nothing was super spicy only incredibly flavourful!
I could eat like this every day!!!
Thank You TRUE THOMAS for offering this incredible feast and HUGE thanks to Ardra for letting me know about it :))
